Red Sox interview Wallach for manager job

The SportsXchange

The Boston Red Sox interviewed Los Angeles Dodgers third-base coach Tim Wallach for nearly 12 hours on Friday as they begin searching for a new manager, ESPN.com reported.

"I hate to get too far ahead of myself but I thought it went really well," Wallach told ESPN Los Angeles. "It was a very informative day. It was a well-done interview process.

"I think it's a great opportunity. I know I said this before, but it really is one of the best organizations in baseball. I'm thrilled to get the opportunity to interview."

Wallach, 55, was a five-time All-Star third baseman who managed the Dodgers' Class AAA team in Albuquerque for two seasons in between stints as Los Angeles' hitting coach and third-base coach.

The team fired Bobby Valentine after one year lasst week after losing 93 games.

San Diego Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus is scheduled to interview with the team next week, according to ESPN Boston.

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Farrell is still "at the top of the list" of candidates, a team source told ESPN.com. Farrell is a former pitching coach with the Red Sox.

"I'm the manager of the Toronto Blue Jays," Farrell told MLB Network Radio. "That's where I've been the last two years. That's where I currently am. This speculation started to rear its head again, oh, probably the final two months of the season.

"I can tell you this -- in my conversations with (general manager) Alex (Anthopoulos), it hasn't distracted me from my job and what the commitment there is. I'm extremely challenged (and) happy as manager of the Blue Jays."

The Red Sox also expressed interest in Farrell last year after they fired Terry Francona, now the Cleveland Indians manager.
