Winners and losers:

Red Sox hire Butterfield as third base coach

The SportsXchange

New Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell is certainly loyal to his lieutenants.

For the second time in the nine days since he was traded from the Blue Jays to the Red Sox, Farrell has hired a former member of his Toronto staff. Brian Butterfield will take over as Boston's third base coach, reprising the role he held in Toronto under Farrell the past two seasons.

Butterfield was also the Blue Jays' third base coach from 2002 to 2007 before he began a stint as Toronto's bench coach.

Torey Lovullo, Toronto's first base coach last year, recently joined Farrell's Boston staff as the bench coach.

Butterfield, 54, was a minor league player from 1979-83, mostly in the New York Yankees' organization. He has been a major league coach with the Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Farrell, formerly Boston's pitching coach, returned to the Red Sox on Oct. 21 after two years as Toronto's manager. As compensation, the Red Sox sent infielder Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays, while Boston also received right-handed pitcher David Carpenter in the deal.
