Red Sox closer Uehara remains out

The SportsXchange

The Boston Red Sox want to wait until closer Koji Uehara's long toss session on Sunday before possibly sending him back to Boston for tests on his stiff right shoulder.

"He's unavailable today," manager John Farrell said before Saturday's game against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. "We haven't gotten to the point of any roster move with him. We're still gathering information. We'll look to put him through a little bit of a throwing program tomorrow. That's the next step."

Uehara reported stiffness in the back of his shoulder after playing long toss with teammate Junichi Tazawa before Friday's game.

Edward Mujica, who had 37 saves for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2013, closed out the Red Sox's 4-2 victory Friday. Farrell said Mujica will act as closer while Uehara is out.

Uehara has two saves and has not allowed a run in five appearances this season. He has seven strikeouts in five innings.

The Red Sox are off on Monday and begin a three-game series at the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.
