What's buzzing:

Red Sox 2, Padres 1

BOSTON -- Jonny Gomes came to the plate as a pinch hitter Wednesday night carrying a .225 average.

However, over his past 14 games, the outfielder was hitting .340 with nine RBIs.

His hot streak continued.

Gomes hit a 2-2 pitch from Luke Gregerson over the wall in left field, his third pinch homer of the season, giving the again-sizzling Boston Red Sox a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres.

The Red Sox have won three games in a row, while the offensively challenged Padres have lost five straight, scoring five runs in the five games.

Gomez hit his second walk-off homer of the season, his sixth home run of the year, as the first-place Red Sox (52-34) improved to 7-1 on their current homestand and moved to a season-high 18 games over .500.

After Junichi Tazawa struck out the side in the eighth, closer Koji Uehara (2-0) got the win for the second time in the last three games.

Edinson Volquez, pitching on his 30th birthday, worked the first six innings for the Padres, while Jon Lester worked the first seven for the home team. Neither was around for the decision.

The Red Sox had first and second and nobody out in the eighth. Dustin Pedroia opened with a double and David Ortiz was walked intentionally for the second time in the game. Gregerson (4-4) replaced Nick Vincent and struck out two while mowing down three straight hitters to end the threat.

Carlos Quentin had three hits for San Diego, giving him a .358 average over his past 31 games.

Home-plate ump Doug Eddings issued warnings to both teams after Jose Iglesias was nailed with Volquez's first pitch of the third inning. The warning resulted from a thought in the ump's head that Iglesias was thrown at because Chase Headley was hit on the foot by Lester after time was called. It seemed like a stretch.

It took Lester 32 pitches to get through the first inning, including eight "extra" pitches to Headley.

With two out and nobody on, Quentin reached on a bad-hop infield hit. The count was 0-1 on Headley and time was called as Lester came out of the stretch. The pitch hit Headley on the foot and, after Headley hobbled around until he was sure he could continue, he went on to a 10-pitch at-bat that ended with a single off the left field wall. Quentin rode to third on the hit and scored when Kyle Blanks singled.

In the bottom of the inning, Shane Victorino doubled with one out and took third on Pedroia's infield hit. Pedroia swiped second but was guilty of a baserunning blunder when he was caught off second on Ortiz's liner up the middle that was caught by shifted shortstop Pedro Ciriaco.

The Red Sox tied the game in the fourth on a single by Mike Carp and a wall double by Jarrod Saltalamacchia; left fielder Quentin getting too close to the wall and having the ball bounced over his head. That allowed Carp to score from first.
