Red Bull Arena experienced only "minor" hurricane damage

The New York Red Bulls front office has indicated that Red Bull Arena should be able to host Saturday's MLS Cup playoff game against D.C. United on Saturday, if local officials and league authorities allow the matchup to proceed.

The stadium was hardly affected by Hurricane Sandy, which flooded much of the Eastern Seaboard and left considerable damage elsewhere, and the club credited its preparations and staff with limiting the cyclone's effects on the venue. The first leg of New York's Eastern Conference semifinal matchup against archrival D.C. is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Saturday.

"Our staff was continually assessing Red Bull Arena overnight and this morning and found only minor, non-structural damage to the facility," the club said in a statement on its website.

"In addition, the pitch was fully covered and did not experience flooding. We want to thank our stadium operations and security staff for their tremendous job in preparing for Hurricane Sandy. Our club is currently in communication with local officials, authorities and Major League Soccer and evaluating our options for Saturday's playoff game against D.C. United. We hope to provide further information soon."
