A tell is a subconscious action(s) other poker players reveal, which provide you a hint of what the player's poker hand may be. Playing poker live (land-based poker rooms) makes this part of the poker game a lot easier since you can actually see the tells, but there are ways you can do this playing online poker.
- Playing Speed - poker players are provided a specific amount of time to react. If Internet connection is good for all players, you can learn a little about your fellow poker players. Often a quick reaction proves a weak hand and a long one signifies strength. The player could be "thinking" strategy.
- Communication - watch the player's discussions even if you are not planning to join in; you can learn a lot from other online poker players. Observe the language used to spot new poker players or other obvious indications of their cards. Some poker players may talk more if they are nervous with a good hand or go totally silent. Keep an eye on the message board.
- Auto Buttons - most online poker rooms have buttons for poker players to select "instant" responses such as "call any", "raise any", "check/fold" and so on. Do not use these, as they are a good indication of new poker players. If an online poker player "auto" checks or bets this usually means they have a weak hand. If "auto" call or raise is used this normally signifies a strong hand.
The main idea is to always "watch" your fellow online poker players for little clues as to their poker hands. You never know when they will provide a glimpse at it. Be aware that some poker players will purposely do the opposite to draw you in, so be prepared for this as well. Another important suggestion: do NOT give "tells" to other online poker players yourself - always be aware of your actions and reactions, while playing poker online (or offline).

Note: Online Poker Legal Information
There are some of the online poker room websites that are not permitted to officially authorize American bank transactions. This is an on-going intense debate with different points of views and laws. If you are an American citizen, I urge you to check your local, state and federal regulations before becoming involved in online poker. For those that live in other countries, I urge you to do the same. As stated, this is an area where changes are being made, so be sure to understand the laws and regulations pertaining to you personally before participating in any form of poker online.
