Running back Derrick Ward announced he is retiring after nine NFL seasons.

"To all my fans just wante dot let u know its been a great ride the last 9yrs but I'm calling it a career. I thanks u all for believing in me!," he tweeted Tuesday.

Ward was a seventh-round pick by the Jets in 2004 and was signed by the Giants off their practice squad as a rookie. He rushed for a career-high 1,025 yards in a backfield that included Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs in 2008.

He later signed a four-year deal with the Buccaneers, but struggled to establish himselft as a feature back and was released after one season. Ward rushed for 469 combined yards over the past two seasons with the Texans, who did not pursue re-signing him this offseason.
