Peyton Hillis is headed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after signing a one-year contract at the veteran minimum, NFL.com reported Tuesday.
Hillis visited the Bucs on Tuesday and wasted no time deciding to join the team. Tampa Bay is looking for a backup behind starting running back Doug Martin after LaGarrette Blount was traded to the New England Patriots during the NFL Draft in April.
Other running backs on the Tampa Bay roster who will compete with Hillis are Brian Leonard, Mike James, Michael Smith and Jeff Demps.
To clear space on the roster for Hillis, the Bucs waived undrafted free agent running back Matt Brown.
Hillis, 27, rushed for 309 yards on 85 carries and one touchdown last season for the Kansas City Chiefs. The past two seasons, Hillis has not come close to the 1,177 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns he had for the Cleveland Browns in 2010.
