Ravens, Falcons lead with four compensatory selections

Three of the four semi-finalists in the 2012 season playoffs will receive the most compensatory picks in the NFL Draft according to selections announced by the league Monday.

The Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens and the NFC finalist Atlanta Falcons each received four compensatory picks while Super Bowl runner-up San Francisco 49ers and the Tennessee Titans picked up three extra picks.

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced will supplement the 222 choices in the seven rounds of the 2013 NFL Draft (April 25-27).

Although this is a case of the rich getting richer this year, it is nothing new for the Ravens to get a good share of compensatory picks. Since this system was installed in 1994, the Ravens collected 37 compensatory picks, six more than any other team.

The Ravens earned their haul this year because last year they lost six players to free agency and signed only two. The Falcons lost four and signed none.

In all, a total of 32 compensatory selections in the 2013 draft were awarded to 16 teams.
