Ranking the NFC South Through Four Weeks; Atlanta Pulling Away: Fan’s Take

Yahoo Contributor Network

In what was a division I thought any team could win this season, the NFC South has gone from one of the best to one of the worst in the entire National Football League. The four teams in the division have a combined 6-10 record, with four of the wins coming from the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons are the only team in the division with a positive point differential and already hold a three game lead over the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With the Falcons on a roll, where does the rest of the NFC South rank?

1. Atlanta Falcons, 4-0

Last Game: 30-28 victory vs. Carolina Panthers

Next Game: @ Washington Redskins on Sunday, October 7

The Falcons will look to stop Robert Griffin III and extend their record to 5-0. They are one of just two teams still without a blemish on their record this season, which is in large part due to the evolution of Matt Ryan and the new offensive scheme put in place during the offseason.

2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 1-3

Last Game: 24-22 loss vs. Washington Redskins

Next Game: vs. Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, October 14

Since winning their opener, the Buccaneers have now dropped three in a row and will hope their bye week helps alter recent success (or failures). Josh Freeman hasn't been great, but he has been better than he was in 2011, which is partially because of new wide receiver, Vincent Jackson.

3. Carolina Panthers, 1-3

Last Game: 30-28 loss vs. Atlanta Falcons

Next Game: vs. Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, October 7

Cam Newton's attitude has been in the news lately after being benched in week three, but he did play a great game against the Falcons last week, coming up short after a late field goal. The Panthers have the talent to succeed, but can't afford to have Newton suffer a meltdown on the bench again.

4. New Orleans Saints, 0-4

Last Game: 28-27 loss vs. Green Bay Packers

Next Game: vs. San Diego Chargers on Sunday, October 7

Most "analysts" expected the Saints to still run away with the division after all the suspensions and drama surrounding them in the offseason, but those people grossly undervalued Sean Payton's value as the coach. The Saints offense has been as stellar as it has been in the past five years, but their defense has been an embarrassment.
