Ranking all 25 potential World Series matchups for 2016

The MLB postseason field is set, with 10 teams now vying to advance to the World Series. That’s 25 potential matchups that could be coming our way at the end of October.

The Chicago Cubs are the headliners, trying to break that 108-year curse. Pairing them up with the Boston Red Sox — in David Ortiz’s final season — could be one heck of a World Series. We’ve also got the Cleveland Indians trying to bust a long drought and join the Cavs in bringing a parade to Cleveland. The Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals have never won a World Series. And it’s been quite a while for the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Excited? We are. So our panel of Big League Stew bloggers ranked every possible World Series matchup. The Stew’s Mike Oz, Chris Cwik, Mark Townsend, Liz Roscher and Israel Fehr each had a ballot. We tallied the results and here they are, along with a quip about each potential series (some more serious than others). Our No. 1 pick was nearly unanimous. It was picked first on four out of five ballots. Now feel free to debate amongst yourselves.

1. Cubs vs. Red Sox: So much here: The team that busted its curse against the team with the most famous curse. Two iconic stadiums. Two great cities. Theo Epstein’s fingerprints everywhere.

2. Cubs vs. Indians: No matter who won, a loooooong World Series drought would be broken. We can get behind that.

3. Cubs vs. Rangers: The best AL regular-season team vs. the best NL regular-season team. Ain’t nothing wrong with that.

4 . Nationals vs. Red Sox: Loser gets Jonathan Papelbon.

5. Nats vs. Orioles: A Beltway Series is your best hope at a geographic rivalry in the World Series.

6. Cubs vs. Blue Jays: Joe Maddon manages a Tim Hortons on an off day.

7. Dodgers vs. Red Sox: And Carl Crawford wouldn’t even be around to see it.

8. Mets vs. Red Sox: Is New York vs. Boston even more fun when Bartolo Colon is involved? Maybe.

9. Cubs vs. Orioles: So many home runs would be hit.

10. Nats vs. Blue Jays: Between Bryce Harper and Josh Donaldson, this might be the best matchup if we’re just talking about brotastic haircuts.

11. Mets vs. Blue Jays: Comes with an added bonus: “The Oral History of the R.A. Dickey” trade.

12. Giants vs. Red Sox: Extra points for the potential of David Ortiz homering into McCovey Cove.

13. Dodgers vs. Indians: One storyline: The biggest payroll in the postseason vs. the smallest (Indians ranked 23rd overall in MLB).

14. Dodgers vs. Blue Jays: Blue Jays haven’t won since ’93. Dodgers not since ’88.

15. Nats vs. Rangers: The Nats — even when they were the Expos — haven’t won the World Series. Neither have the Rangers.

16. Mets vs. Rangers: Yoenis Cespedes would have to play on horseback.

17. Dodgers vs. Rangers: aka the Adrian Beltre World Series. No, you still can’t rub his head.

18. Nats vs. Indians: Party at Natoli’s … you’re right, we should delete our account.

19. Mets vs. Indians: At the start of the season, this would be an embarrassment of pitching riches. Now? Not so much.

20. Giants vs. Rangers: A rematch of the 2010 World Series, which the Giants won in five.

21. Giants vs. Indians: The Bay Area vs. Cleveland worked a lot better in basketball.

22. Dodgers vs. Orioles: Loser gets Bud Norris.

23. Mets vs. Orioles: The starting pitching in this series would be … something. At least there’s Bartolo.

24. Giants vs. Blue Jays: Can we get a live stream of Madison Bumgarner eating poutine?

25. Giants vs. Orioles: Apparently Halloween is enough orange and black for October.
