Rangers sign top three draft choices

The Texas Rangers made quick work of getting their top draft picks under contract.

The team announced Monday, four days after the draft began, that it signed both of its first-round selections and its second-round choice.

Oral Roberts University right-hander Alex "Chi-Chi" Gonzalez, the 23rd overall selection, received a bonus of approximately $2.2 million, multiple media outlets reported. The 21-year-old was assigned to Spokane of the short-season Class A Northwest League, according to ESPNDallas.com.

"I'm ready to go," Gonzalez told the website. "I'm strong. I threw a bullpen Friday and I'm ready to go. No time off."

Winder (Ga.) Barrow High School shortstop Travis Demeritte, the 30th overall pick, reportedly received a $1.9 million bonus. The 18-year-old will join the Rangers' affiliate in the rookie-level Arizona League, ESPNDallas.com reported.

West Florence (S.C.) High School right-hander Akeem Bostick, the 62nd overall selection, reportedly agreed to a $520,600 bonus.

Demeritte was chosen with the draft pick the Rangers received as compensation for losing free agent outfielder Josh Hamilton to the Los Angeles Angels.
