Catcher A.J. Pierzynski signed a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.
The deal, worth an estimated $7.5 million, was reported last week by ESPNDallas.com and became final after Pierzynski passed a physical.
To clear room on the 40-man roster, the Rangers designated catcher Luis Martinez for assignment.
The 35-year-old Pierzynski is coming off one of his best years at the plate with the Chicago White Sox. He hit .278 with a career-high 27 home runs and 77 RBI in 135 games.
The Rangers will use Pierzynski and Geovany Soto, who signed a one-year contract in the offseason, as its catchers next year. Pierzynski adds a left-handed bat to a roster that lost power-hitting Josh Hamilton to the Los Angeles Angels in the offseason.
