Rams officially name Walton as defensive coordinator
The St. Louis Rams announced Friday what was widely known for a week that Tim Walton will be the team's new defensive coordinator.
Walton replaces a coordinator the Rams never really had last season. Gregg Williams was suspended for the 2012 season for his role in the New Orleans Saints' bounty program and the job was left to a collaboration of defensive assistants. Williams left St. Louis last month.
The Rams interviewed former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and appeared to have a deal with him, but the two parties decided it wasn't a fit. Other candidates included Mike Singletary and Dick Jauron.
"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to add coach Walton to our staff," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said in a statement. "Tim is a talented coach and he's spent the last four years working in our system. He will be a huge asset to our staff and we are all looking forward to working with him."
Walton was secondary coach for the Detroit Lions, where he worked for coach Jim Schwartz, a former defensive coordinator under Fisher with the Tennessee Titans.
