Rams activate S McDonald

The SportsXchange

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- When St. Louis Rams safety T.J. McDonald suffered a broken bone in his leg on Sept. 26 against the San Francisco 49ers, he first feared his season would be lost. Subsequent tests revealed the injury was not as serious as first believed, and McDonald was placed on injured reserve/designated for return.

Normally, a player in that situation has to miss six games before returning to practice and eight games before being eligible to play. However, league rules do not state "games," they state "weeks," so McDonald got another "break."

Because the 49ers' game was on a Thursday and McDonald was placed on reserve the next day, the eight-week period expired Friday, making him eligible to be activated for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.

The Rams made the move official Saturday, activating McDonald while also moving cornerback Quinton Pointer from the practice squad to the active roster.

To make room on the roster for McDonald and Pointer, the Rams placed cornerback Cortland Finnegan and quarterback Brady Quinn on injured reserve.
