Following the TV ratings success of the Michael Chandler vs. Eddie Alvarez rematch on Spike TV – the event averaged 1.1 million viewers, peaking at 1.4 million – Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney was hopeful that the promotion would finish the season strong.
“We keep climbing and I think the rest of the season is going to be ridiculously strong,” Rebney told MMAWeekly.com. “I think we’re going to do real good numbers the rest of the season. It’ll be a strong run for us.”
The past two weeks since Bellator 106: Chandler vs. Alvarez II have been two of the Bellator’s strongest in regard to TV ratings, although neither reached the record-setting numbers of that pivotal rematch.
Bellator 107, which featured Cheick Kongo vs. Peter Graham in the main event, amassed respectable audience of 683,000 viewers, while the more recent Bellator 108, which featured Rampage Jackson’s debut, drew 793,000 viewers, the second-highest mark of the season.
In facing fellow UFC veteran Joey Beltran, Jackson proved his drawing power when his main event fight drew 1.1 million viewers during its quarter hour, peaking at 1.2 million viewers.
Those two recent events may or may not classify as “ridiculously strong,” but clearly represent a significant improvement in Bellator’s TV ratings on Spike, which had struggled to surpass 600,000 viewers in the three weeks prior to Chandler vs. Alvarez II.
Rebney, of course, admittedly wouldn’t be satisfied, even if each event has notched above 1,000,000 viewers.
“It was great to get those numbers, but I’m never really, truly satisfied,” he said after the record number that Chandler and Alvarez produced. “If I had heard a 1.7, I would have wanted a 2.4. If I heard a 2.4, I would’ve wanted a 3.3 – that’s just my nature. But it was good to hear. It was the best we’ve ever done. We’re into the millions and we just gotta keep building on it.”
