Former Ultimate Fighting Championship light-heavyweight champ, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, hasn't exactly been on friendly terms with the promotion ever since his UFC 144 loss to Ryan Bader.
Despite their differences, the UFC's brass actually picked Rampage as their first choice to coach opposite Chael Sonnen on the 17th season of "The Ultimate Fighter," but Jackson declined the offer. He explained his decision during a conversation with MMAFighting.com.
"Forget TUF," Quinton said. "I'm not interested in that... I don't want to fight Chael. He's the kind of fighter that I don't want to fight. He's a boring fighter that just wants to hump people."
Jackson was a part of the most successful TUF season ever, so it's really not surprising the UFC tried to get him to coach opposite Sonnen. Even though Kimbo Slice (real name Kevin Ferguson) was mostly responsible for the highest ratings in TUF history, Rampage certainly did his part as well, constantly goading opposing coach, Rashad Evans, throughout the season.
Given Jackson and Sonnen's trash talking abilities, a TUF season featuring the two would have been a huge hit.
Rampage has been vocal about his disdain for Sonnen lately, so it's surprising he declined the opportunity to settle his differences with "The American Gangster." With Jackson's beef with the UFC's brass, and his contract being down to one fight, the opportunity seems too good to pass up.
Jackson was originally set to face Glover Teixeira at UFC 153, but he ended up pulling out of the fight due to an injury. Rampage was replaced with Fabio Maldonado, who ended up losing to Teixeira at UFC 153. Jackson campaigned for another fight against Teixeira afterwards, but he changed his mind during an interview with Bas Rutten, after finding out Teixeira was issued a six-month suspension.
Rampage now wants a rematch against Forrest Griffin -- who ended Jackson's title reign with a controversial decision victory at UFC 86 -- but the promotion's matchmakers have already decided to go with Phil Davis.
