Raiders sign DE Andre Carter

Defensive end Andre Carter was signed by the Oakland Raiders, who also added wide receiver Tori Gurley to their practice squad.

Carter was a first-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2001 and has 76 sacks in 163 career games. He was with the Patriots in 2011, registering four sacks at the New York Jets on Nov. 13 and had 10 for the season when he was placed on injured reserve with a leg injury on Dec. 20. He was forced to sit out the team's playoff run.

Carter has experience as an end in 4-3 schemes and as an outside linebacker in a 3-4. With the Raiders, he is expected to be in the rotation behind starting ends Lamarr Houston and Matt Shaughnessey.

Carter played for Cal, where he left as the school's all-time leader with 31 career sacks. He was a unanimous first-team All-America selections by the Associated Press and The Sporting News as a senior.

He prepped at Oak Grove High School in San Jose, receiving USA Today All-America honors.

Offensive lineman Joe Barksdale, a third-round pick in 2011, was waived.
