Rory McIlroy and Thomas Bjørn started the final round in the lead at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. Martin Kaymer was not far off the lead and in the chase. Also in contention was the leader after one day in Rafael Cabrera-Bello. The finish was bound to be exciting. I do not think anyone accurately predicted the final outcome. I, for sure did not, as can be evidence by my predictions in my article McIlroy and Bjørn on Fire.
McIlroy got off to a bad start. He had a birdieless front nine on a course that was yielding many low scores. A bogey on hole one and a double bogey on the ninth did not help his cause. The young man from Norther Ireland started settling down after his mishaps and proceeded to make four birdies on the back nine. He shot a -1 round, good enough for a tie for fifth place.
Bjorn also faltered. He, as well, had a birdiesless front nine with two bogeys on holes three and nine. Similarly to McIlroy, he started making the most of his round on the back nine, making a birdie on hole 11 and an eagle on 13. His final score was -13, good enough for a tie for ninth place.
The story of the day was around Rafael Cabrera-Bello. After an incredible -9 round to begin the tournament, the golfer slipped. I predicted he would not be a factor. However, the golfer came alive again during his last round. He was bogeyless and made four birdies throughout the day. His final cumulative score was -18, good enough for a victory. Congratulations to the golfer for another fantastic round of golf.
Lee Westwood also had an impressive tournament. It has been a slow start to the 2012 for the current second ranked player in the world. However, he started coming alive during his
second and third rounds, shooting -7 and -5 respectively. With an eagle on the second hole during the final round, he solidified his spot in a tie for second, shooting a cumulative score of -17.
This tournament again showed why golf is one of the most exciting sports to watch. Anyone can potentially win, and with a field of such stiff competition, amazing finishes are bound to happen. The Omega Dubai Desert Classic was yet another incredible tournament on the European Tour and I look forward to watching more events in the future.
I am an avid golf fan. I enjoy playing recreational on local courses and watching the PGA Tour. I also like keeping up to date with all the new faces to the game.
