Queretaro given one week to sell, Atlante maintains Liga MX hopes

Atlante was relegated from the Liga MX following the Clausura 2014, but despite the tears in the stands and on the pitch, the Cancun-based club may yet be handed a lifeline.

With Queretaro currently run by the Mexican government because of its former owner’s alleged financial fraud, the Liga MX authorities seem to be cooking up a new scheme to decide which teams will be in the league next season should a buyer not come in for Gallos Blancos during the next week.

According to comments made on Tuesday by Andres Fassi - Pachuca vice-president and member of the Mexican federation’s (FMF) sporting development committee - there are two options on the table in the case of Queretaro being disaffiliated from the Liga MX.

The first would be for both the finalists in the Ascenso MX – Guadalajara teams Leones Negros and Estudiantes Tecos – to be promoted. The second is the losing finalist going through a playoff against Atlante to see which club takes Queretaro’s place.

If Leones Negros and Estudiantes Tecos go up, it would mean Guadalajara has four teams in the first division and Grupo Pachuca would own three of the 18 teams – Pachuca, Leon, Tecos.

But this isn’t the first time that promotion and relegation in Mexico has been a cloudy issue after the season has ended and places have apparently been decided.

Just last year, promoted side La Piedad was moved to Veracruz, relegated Queretaro bought out Jaguares de Chiapas, and the Chiapas ownership then bought San Luis to remain in the first division.

The changes drew widespread criticism in the Mexican press, especially relegated Queretaro maintaining its first division status through buying out another team and promoted La Piedad disappearing entirely.
