Quarterback Breakdown

Matt Buser
Yahoo Sports

The following table shows scoring trends for every quarterback who recorded at least one point (positive or negative, and based on Yahoo! default scoring settings) during the 2006 NFL season. The table shows how many games the player made an appearance in and his single-game highs and lows during the season. The column marked average is just that – it's the average number of points that the quarterback produced in games that he made an appearance in. The last column (StDev) is the player's standard deviation. What it shows is how far, on average, the player varied from their weekly average – the larger the standard deviation, the farther from his average point total the player was from week to week.

For reference, Rex Grossman's standard deviation verifies what kind of roller-coaster season he had – while he averaged a middling 9.00 fantasy points, his standard deviation of 11.38 points means that, in a given week, he was just as likely to be far below his average as he was to be well above it. By contrast, Jay Cutler averaged 11.40 points in his five starts, and his standard deviation was just 2.87 points, on average, from that average.
