Former Texas Tech quarterback Michael Brewer announced Sunday that he is transferring to Virginia Tech. Brewer is eligible to play this season because he is graduating this spring. He has two years of eligibility remaining. Brewer was projected to start for Texas Tech last year but a back injury kept him out the first month of the season. By the time he returned, freshmen Davis Webb and Baker Mayfield had jumped ahead of him on the depth chart. The Hokies will have a wide-open competition for the starting quarterback spot with Logan Thomas hoping to get drafted in the NFL. Brewer will compete against fifth-year senior Mark Leal, among others on scholarship with less experience. Brewer wanted to go to TCU or Texas, but Texas Tech denied his request to transfer within the Big 12.
