PRESS BOX: Tigers name Ausmus as manager
The Detroit Tigers named Brad Ausmus as their new manager on Sunday.
Ausmus traveled to Detroit to complete the deal to replace Jim Leyland, who retired after the Tigers were defeated by the Boston Red Sox in the American League Championship Series.
The 44-year-old former catcher played in the major leagues for 18 years but has no managerial experience other than with Team Israel in the qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic earlier this year.
Since Ausmus retired as a player in 2010, he has worked as a special assistant for the San Diego Padres.
--The Oakland A's agreed to a minor league deal with right-hander Philip Humber, the Bay Area News Group reported.
The Houston Astros made Humber a free agent on Oct. 3 by declining a $3 million club option for next season. Humber, 30, had a 7.90 ERA in 54 2/3 innings, mainly as a reliever.

--- Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook was scheduled to make his season debut Sunday night against the visiting Phoenix Suns.
Westbrook, who had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee in October, was expected to miss the first four to six weeks of the season.
