Press Box: Texas loses defensive end Jeffcoat
Texas defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat is out for the season with a right pectoral muscle rupture that he sustained against Oklahoma on Saturday, ESPN.com reported Monday.
The junior will have surgery to repair the damage, according to Texas trainer Kenny Boyd.
Cedric Reed and Reggie Wilson will most likely fill in for Jeffcoat, with Wilson considered the more productive of the two.
Quarterback David Ash sustained a left wrist injury in the 63-21 loss. An X-ray did not show a fracture, and coach Mack Brown said Ash seems to be fine.
---Mark Weisman, Iowa's leading rusher, probably will not play in Saturday's game against Penn State because of a foot injury. Weisman was not listed on the Hawkeyes' depth chart this week. In the past four games, he has rushed for 623 yards.
AUTO RACING
--Fox and NASCAR agreed to an eight-year extension of their current television broadcast rights deal that will extend the partnership through 2022.
Sports Business Daily reported the deal could be worth about $2.4 billion, a large increase from the existing eight-year, $1.76 billion deal.
The second half of the NASCAR season is open for bid, but SBD reported no negotiations are expected until the summer of 2013. ESPN and Turner hold rights through the 2014 season.
GOLF
--Phil Mickelson will hit a 100-yard shot for up to $1 million for a charity during halftime of Monday night's NFL game between the host San Diego Chargers and the Denver Broncos.
Golf Digest reported that Mickelson, a San Diego native, will take aim from one of Qualcomm Stadium's end zones and fire at targets in the other. The donation amount to First Book, a non-profit organization that provides new books for children in need, depends on which targets Mickelson is able to hit.
Mickelson's sponsor, KPMG, will donate up to $1 million or up to 400,000 books.
