Press Box: Predators re-sign Josi
The Nashville Predators announced Monday that they re-signed defenseman Roman Josi to a seven-year, $28 million contract.
Josi, 23, had 18 points (five goals and 13 assists) while playing all 48 games of the lockout-shortened season.
He will make $2.5 million in 2013-14, $3 million in 2014-15, $4 million in 2015-16, $4.25 million in 2016-17, $5 million in 2017-18, $5.25 million in 2018-19 and $4 million in 2019-20.
Josi was the first Swiss player to be named Most Valuable Player of World Championships tournament, played earlier this year. Switzerland won the silver medal, its first medal in 60 years. Josi led all defensemen with four goals and nine points in the tournament.
GOLF
---Sergio Garcia spoke face-to-face with Tiger Woods for the first time since he made a "fried chicken" comment about Woods on May 21.
Garcia and Woods shook hands while briefly speaking to each other on the driving range at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.
Garcia made the comments during a European Tour function near London. He previously apologized and Woods said two weeks ago he was moving on from the incident.
When asked about his exchange with Garcia, Woods said, "I'm not going there," according to ESPN.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
---Florida State wide receiver Greg Dent was arrested and charged with sexual assault Sunday night, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
Dent, a senior, was held in Leon County (Fla.) Jail. The specific charge was sexual assault on a person over the age of 12. Dent was scheduled to appear in court on Monday to determine his bond amount.
Dent had 27 catches for 355 yards last year.
---Harvey Updyke Jr., the University of Alabama fan who poisoned Auburn's famed oak trees, was released from jail.
Updyke, 64, plans to leave the state and live with his wife, Elva, in Louisiana, according to his attorney.
Updyke was arrested last September and pleaded guilty to unlawful damage of an animal or crop facility in March while serving jail time. He was sentenced to six months in jail, but had already received credit for 104 of the 180 days.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
---Florida guard Scottie Wilbekin was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules, the school announced via Twitter.
No other details were available.
Wilbekin was instrumental in the Gators' 29-8 season, averaging 9.1 points and 5.0 assists. He was also suspended the first three games of last season for an undisclosed reason.
