PRESS BOX: Michigan State No. 1 in basketball poll

Michigan State is on top of the Associated Press top 25 poll for the first time in more than a decade.

The Spartans (3-0) moved up a spot in the latest poll Monday after knocking off previous No. 1 Kentucky last week.

Michigan State received 51 of 65 first-place votes.

Michigan State last held the top ranking in the AP poll in the 2000-01 season. Before that, the Spartans had a two-week run at No. 1 during Magic Johnson's national title season in 1978-79.

Kansas (3-0), which beat Duke in the second game of the Champions Classic doubleheader, moved from fifth to No. 2 and received seven first-place votes. Louisville (3-0) remained at No. 3 and got the remaining seven top votes.


---Eight relatives of PGA Tour golfer Jason Day were killed by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, including his grandmother, uncle and six cousins.

The typhoon has claimed nearly 4,000 lives, according to CNN.


--- Miami Heat standout LeBron James said he is discussing with soccer star David Beckham the possibility of bringing a Major League Soccer franchise to South Florida, reported.

James is a soccer fan and he already has an ownership stake with Liverpool of the English Premier League.

Beckham recently retired as one of soccer's most recognizable figures but recently has been looking into the possibility of running an MLS team.


----An MRI taken on Golden State Warriors backup center Jermaine O'Neal revealed a bruised right knee and minor right groin strain, the team announced.

O'Neal did not travel with the team for Monday night's game at the Utah Jazz. He is listed as day-to-day.

---Minnesota Timberwolves small forward Chase Budinger rejoined the team for light workouts at practice while he recovers from left knee surgery.

Budinger is still about a month away from appearing in a game. He had part of the meniscus in his knee removed.
