Wayne Rooney returned from suspension Tuesday and scored in the 48th minute to give England a 1-0 soccer victory over Ukraine in Donetsk, Ukraine, giving England a berth in the quarterfinals of the European Championship.
England won Group D and will next face Italy in Kiev on Sunday.
Ukraine seemed to tie the score in the 62nd minute when Marko Devic's shot crossed the line before it was cleared.
England needed only a tie to advance, and Ukraine needed a victory.
Thanks to England's victory, France also advanced to the quarterfinals, even though it lost to Swede 2-0 in Kiev, Ukraine.
The loss ended France's 23-game unbeaten streak but it still finished second in Group D. France will face Spain in the quarterfinals.
--- Forward Darren Helm has agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings worth $8.5 million, the team announced Tuesday.
Helm, 25, had nine goals and 26 points in 68 games for the Wings this past season.
Helm would have become a restricted free agent July 1.
--- American Patrick Cantlay announced his decision to turn professional on Tuesday, two days after tying for 41st place at the U.S. Open in San Francisco.
Cantlay, 20, won the 2011 Mark H. McCormack Medal as the world's No. 1 amateur.
He will make his first appearance as a pro at this week's Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut.
