PRESS BOX: Avalanche G Varlamov charged with assault

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov was formally charged with assault on Friday by the Denver District Attorney, the Denver Post reported.

Varlamov, 25, was arrested after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend at their Denver home on Oct. 30. According to an arrest affidavit, she claimed he knocked her down with a kick and stomped on her chest.

On Friday he was charged with one count of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.

He was released from custody on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Denver County court on Dec. 2.

Varlamov, the team's No. 1 goalie, has played in eight games since his arrest, going 4-4 in that stretch. For the season, Varlamov has an 11-5-0 record and 2.23 goals-against average.

---The Dallas Stars traded forward Lane MacDermid to the Calgary Flames for a 2014 six-round draft pick, according to NHL.com.

MacDermid, 24, has two assists and a plus-2 rating over six games this season. The Flames will assign MacDermid to Abbotsford of the AHL, according to the Calgary Sun.

---Florida state attorney Willie Meggs said Friday morning he will not render a decision by the end of the day as to whether to file sexual assault charges against Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston.

The Heisman Trophy candidate is being investigated for an incident that allegedly happened in December 2012.

Winston, 19, has not been arrested or charged, and the university has maintained all week that he will play this Saturday.

---Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel will announce before the Aggies' bowl game whether he will enter the 2014 NFL draft, Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin said on ESPN Radio. Manziel is a redshirt sophomore with two seasons of college eligibility left after this season.

---New York Knicks coach Mike Woodson was fined $25,000 for publicly criticizing officials, the NBA announced.

Woodson made the comments during an ESPN radio interview on Thursday, regarding a foul that was called on Knicks guard Iman Shumpert when Pacers forward Paul George was attempting a 3-point shot and a foul that was not called attempted a final shot in regulation time.

"I think Melo gets hit more than ever," Woodson said. "I've been at this thing 30 years. Sometimes I'm starting to wonder what's a foul and what's not a foul. What are you going to do? They can't see everything and I understand that. Sometimes they miss calls. I thought he got bumped on it. Hell, he didn't get the call so we have to move on."

---Hall of Famer Vern Mikkelsen, who spent all 10 of his NBA seasons with the Minneapolis Lakers, died on Thursday in Wayzata, Minn., the Lakers announced Friday.

He was 85.

--- After being played on the West Coast for 15 years, the World Challenge golf tournament will be moved to Florida next year.

The Tiger Woods Foundation, which operates the event, announced Friday that the 2014 event will be played Dec. 4-7 at Isleworth Country Club in Orlando, Fla.

The tournament will be played at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif., next month, but that will be the final time the event will be played on the West Coast.
