Press Box: Auriemma says he's finished as women's U.S national coachBy The Sports Xchange | The SportsXchange – Thu, Aug 16, 2012 7:20 PM EDT
Connecticut women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma said the London Games will be his last Olympics with the U.S. national team. Auriemma said he has "zero" interest in continuing as coach, a role he's had since 2009. "If you ask me right now, today, I would say it is somebody else's turn," Auriemma said in a meeting with reporters in Storrs, Conn. USA Basketball won't begin searching for a replacement until closer to the next formal major competition in 2014. Mike Krzyzewski, who was head coach of the gold-medal winning men's team in London, is also re-signing. ---Phil Knight's 80th birthday will be worth celebrating for college basketball fans. ESPN reported Michigan State, Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Georgetown, Connecticut, Stanford and Ohio State are among the 16 programs sponsored by Nike who are committed to playing in a two-tournament event in November 2017. Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis said it was a way for the programs to reciprocate the support they've received over the years from Knight, who turns 80 on Feb. 24, 2018. The tournaments would take place in Portland, Ore., over four days. Butler, Florida, Gonzaga, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Xavier would also be in the field. NHL ---Right wing Wayne Simmonds signed a six-year contract extension worth $23.82 million with the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday, according to the team website. Simmonds had said he would play out this final year of his contract this season, and focus on contract negotiations after the season. But apparently things changed. Simmonds, 23, had 28 goals and 21 assists last season, and he played all 82 regular-season games for the second time in his four-year NHL career. NBA ---The NBA released its 2012 preseason schedule, which begins Friday, Oct. 5, in Istanbul when the Boston Celtics take on Turkish basketball power Fenerbahce Ulker at Ulker Sports Arena.
