Power Ranking the NFC South After Week One: Fan's Opinion

Yahoo Contributor Network

The NFC South is expected to be one of the most competitive divisions in the NFL during the 2012 season and if week one is any indication, the experts are right. All of the teams ended up in tough games, with only one team blowing out their opponents. It was a fun day to be an NFC South fan overall, even though my Carolina Panthers began the season with a loss. Here is a look at how I see the NFC South after one week of NFL action:

NFC South Power Rank Number One - Atlanta Falcons

Clearly the Atlanta Falcons win the golden trophy for week one with a 40-24 blowout victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Matt Ryan looked like this might be his year as he torched the Chiefs all day long. Julio Jones was back to his old ways with a pair of touchdowns, proving that he and Ryan will be a thorn in the opposition's side all year long.

NFC South Power Rank Number Two - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs came out and simply smacked the Carolina Panthers in the mouth. From the opening bell it was clear that they had no intentions of allowing their losing streak from 2011 to continue. Tampa Bay's defense looked much faster that last year's version and the offense did enough to win. Most importantly, they were able to come up with big plays time after time when they needed them.

NFC South Power Rank Number Three - New Orleans Saints

The Saints lost to the Washington Redskins and Robert Griffin III, but they certainly made a game of it at the end. It seemed as though they would explode at any moment offensively, but the explosion never truly came. Credit Washington with that for the most part as Robert Griffin III kept them off the field and on their heels throughout the game. The Saints defense got simply torched.

NFC South Power Rank Number Four - Carolina Panthers

Although there were a few minor bright spots for the Panthers, generally speaking they laid a rotten egg on opening weekend. They were moving around in quicksand on offense and never seemed to be in rhythm. These kinds of games happen to every team but you don't want to see it happen during week one. Whatever the case, the Panthers definitely earned their spot at the bottom of these power rankings for week one.

*Southern is a huge Carolina Panthers fan that is convinced that he will see a Super Bowl Trophy in Charlotte within five years.
