The Chicago Bulls 2012 NBA Summer League team will play five games in six days league beginning July 17 with a roster that includes a couple of interesting names.
Former Illini star Demetri McCamey and NBA journeyman Leon Powe highlight a roster that also includes current Bulls Jimmy Butler and Marquis Teague.
Jimmy Butler, SF, Chicago Bulls;
Marquis Teague, PG, Chicago Bulls;
Olek Czyz, SF, University of Nevada;
Demetri McCamey, PG, Mersin (Turkey);
Leon Powe, PF, Atleticos de San German (Puerto Rico);
Jamie Skeen, PF, Ironi Ashkelon (Israel);
Jermaine Taylor, SG, Rio Grande Valley (D-League).
Ramone Moore, SG, Temple University;
Malcolm Thomas, PF, Los Angeles D-fenders (D-League);
Chase Simon, G, University of Detroit;
Henry Sims, C, Georgetown University;
Edwin Ubiles, G/F, Dakota Wizards
Charles Abouo, G/F, BYU;
Jake Anderson, G, Illinois State University.
While McCamey, who played his collegiate ball at the University of Illinois, is an extreme long shot to make the team - stress extreme - it'll be interesting to see what the Bulls do with Powe. A 6-foot-8 power forward/center, Powe has a decent post game but is not a good rebounder or great defender. He's very strong, however, and could serve as a back-up back-up big man, and maybe take on some of the blue-collar work Kurt Thomas used to do as the Bulls' enforcer. Simons, a true 7-footer, went undrafted this year after and also might be worth a look.
Power forward Brian Scalabrine, who spent the last two seasons with the Bulls, asked to be on the team but was not listed on its roster as of July 10 (summer league rosters are pretty fluid).
July 17, 7 p.m., vs. Boston
July 18, 3 p.m., vs. Houston
July 20, 5:30 p.m. vs. Golden State
July 21, 5:30 p.m., vs. LA Clippers
July 22, 1 p.m., vs. Milwaukee
All told, 24 teams will play a 60-game schedule in Las Vegas summer league; all 60 will be broadcast on NBA-TV, including 39 live broadcasts. Serious NBA junkies can purchase a broadband package for $14.99 which includes live box scores, an on-demand game archive and live DVR functionality.
Launched in 2004 as the Las Vegas Summer League, the first event featured six teams and a 13-game schedule. The NBA joined teamed up with the event organizers in 2007, and the event took off from there. During the most recent league in 2010, 22 teams, including 11 playoff teams, competed in a 58-game schedule that featured 10 of the top 14 picks in the 2010 NBA Draft. This year, 13 of the top 14 draft picks from the 2012 NBA Draft will play in the league.
