The Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders FC drew 1-1 in a Saturday afternoon MLS game. The result leaves Seattle second with Portland still tethered to the basement of the Western Conference (though now equal on points with Chivas USA).
A collision meant Donovan Ricketts had to go off injured in the 57th minute, replaced by Joe Bendik. Sounders FC exploited the situation ruthlessly a minute later. Fredy Montero latched onto a Michael Gspurning clearance in the box and surprised Bendik with a quick half-volley around his marker. Despite the Colombian's awkward body shape -- he was facing the sideline -- the ball dipped just under the crossbeam to open the scoring.
It was Gspurning's first-ever MLS assist.
The Timbers equalized with less than 15 minutes remaining. Jack Jewsbury floated a cross into the box, where Rodney Wallace powered a header on frame. A combination of Gspurning and Leo Gonzalez couldn't keep the ball out and it bounced across the line.
