Caleb Porter may have fallen just shy of the Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup, but the Portland Timbers coach is still walking away from the 2013 campaign with a some hardware.

MLS named Porter its Coach of the Year on Monday, rewarding the first-year boss for a turnaround that saw the Timbers go from 8-16-10 in 2012 to a Western Conference-best 14-5-15 this past season. The 38-year-old, whose Timbers were ousted by RSL in the Western Conference final, took over Portland following seven seasons at the University of Akron.

Mike Petke of the Supporters' Shield-winning New York Red Bulls came in second, while Jason Kreis of Real Salt Lake and Oscar Pareja of the Colorado Rapids finished third and fourth, respectively. Porter and Petke actually tied on the club vote, but Porter won the player vote by 10 percent and the media vote by a whopping 30 percent.

The league Monday also announced New England Revolution defender Kevin Alston as the Comeback Player of the Year. Alston, 25, was diagnosed with leukemia in early April but returned to the field July 27, playing five games down the stretch.

Philadelphia Union forward Conor Casey, Seattle Sounders midfielder-forward Lamar Neagle and Portland Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts rounded out the top four.
