Podsednik gives Dodgers outfield insurance

Hedging against injuries to starting left fielder Manny Ramirez(notes) and backup Reed Johnson(notes), the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon acquired Kansas City Royals outfielder Scott Podsednik(notes) for minor leaguers Lucas May and Elisaul Pimentel.

Podsednik, 34, batted .309 with 30 stolen bases and a .352 on-base percentage for the Royals. He is due to make about $620,000 the rest of the season. May is a catcher and Pimentel is a right-handed pitcher.

The Dodgers, Podsednik’s fourth team since 2008, have covered for Ramirez with Johnson, Jamey Carroll(notes), Xavier Paul(notes) and Garret Anderson(notes). Ramirez is expected to miss at least two more weeks because of a strained calf. Johnson’s back injury will keep him out until at least mid-August, as well.
