The National Women's Soccer League placed 55 national team players to its eight teams on Friday, and now the debate begins as to which teams fared the best in the player allocation.
The Portland Thorns landed Alex Morgan, the Western New York Flashes got Abby Wambach, and the Seattle Reign was awarded goalie Hope Solo. But a number of other star players were placed throughout the league.
The allocation process was conducted with the assistance of a panel of experts. Players were placed based on their preferred destinations, the teams' needs, marketing considerations and competitive balance.
The new women's league is scheduled to begin play in April.
The salaries of the 23 American, 16 Canadian and 16 Mexican national team players are being funded by their respective federations.
A schedule and rules for the leaue are still being drafted.
"This allocation process is obviously a big step in building the foundation for this league and each of the teams will benefit from a group of very talented players," said NWSL Executive Director Cheryl Bailey in a statement from the league. "This is always a difficult process, but we believe there was a fair distribution of talent across all eight teams and with the NWSL College Draft coming up in Indianapolis on Jan. 18, the rosters of the clubs will really start to take shape."
