ST. LOUIS -- Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez and manager Clint Hurdle were ejected in the bottom of the first inning of Friday night's game against St. Louis.
After allowing back-to-back homers to Matt Carpenter and Carlos Beltran and a single to Matt Holliday, Sanchez hit Allen Craig in the ear hole of his helmet with the first pitch. Home-plate umpire Tim Timmons promptly ejected Sanchez, deeming the pitch's location was intentional.
Hurdle came out of the dugout to argue with Timmons and was kicked out. It was the first ejection for Hurdle this season.
Jeanmar Gomez relieved Sanchez, who failed to get an out in another ineffective start. Gomez kept the Cardinals from scoring again in the inning with a double-play ball and a lineout. Sanchez entered the game with an ERA of 11.12.
