Pirates expected to place closer Grilli on DL

The SportsXchange

Pittsburgh Pirates closer Jason Grilli is expected to go on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to Monday with a strained left oblique.

Grilli was unavailable for Friday's game, but contrary to previous reports, he has not yet officially been placed on the disabled list.

To replace him on the roster, the Pirates are expected to call up reliever Jared Hughes from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday night. Mark Melacon, who filled in for Grilli last year while he was injured, will take over the closer's role.

The 37-year-old Grilli had blown three of his seven save opportunities in the first month -- already equaling his season total of blown saves in 2013 -- and posted a 4.50 ERA. The 2013 All-Star has not pitched since he gave up ninth-inning home runs to Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun on Saturday and Sunday.

Hughes had just gone back to Indianapolis on Thursday after the Pirates activated Brandon Cumpton. Hughes pitched the ninth inning on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds and was credited with a victory.
