Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Kyle McPherson underwent Tommy John surgery July 10, the team announced Saturday.
McPherson suffered the injury in spring training and has been shut down several times due to elbow pain.
He had the surgery during a visit to Dr. James Andrews. He is expected to be out until at least next summer.
McPherson lost out in his bid to win a spot in the rotation in spring training. He made his major-league debut last season, going 0-2 with a 2.73 ERA in 10 games, including three starts.
