Lower back stiffness will keep Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Jeff Locke from starting Sunday against the New York Mets and also from pitching in the All-Star Game on Tuesday.
Gerrit Cole will start for the Pirates in Locke's place against the Mets in the final game before the All-Star break. As for who will take Locke's place on the National League roster, manager Bruce Bochy of the San Francisco Giants was expected to made an announcement sometime during the weekend.
Locke's back tightened during a start on Monday against Oakland and he continued to feel discomfort during a bullpen session on Friday.
His next scheduled start -- a week from Sunday in Cincinnati after the All-Star break - should give him time to rest.
"Really, we could not have had a better time to take care of that type of physical issue," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said.
Locke will still participate in All-Star Game activities in New York even though he will not be available for the game.
