Piazza to appear in ballet

The SportsXchange

Could Mike Piazza be preparing for a second career as a ballet dancer?

The former Major League catcher and possible Hall-of-Famer will take the stage with the Miami City Ballet, according to multiple reports.

Piazza, who hit 427 home runs with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Marlins and New York Mets, will play a gangster in the May 3 production of "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue." He won't trade in catching gear for tights. He'll wear a 1920s-era costume, recite a few lines and then watch show performance from an onstage seat.

"He won't be dancing or catching any flying ballerinas, but he will be part of the action," Roberto Santiago, a spokesman for the ballet company, told the New York Daily News.

The turn is Piazza's gift to his 6-year-old daughter, Nicoletta, who is a student at Miami City Ballet School.

"It's going to be a lot of fun seeing the reaction of my two little girls," Piazza said in a statement. "For (Nicoletta) to have the opportunity to see Daddy on stage is my little gift. I'm looking forward to it."
