Phillies tab Hamels as opening day starter

The SportsXchange

Left-hander Cole Hamels was named as the Philadelphia Phillies' opening day starter next month, the team announced Thursday.

The outing April 1 against the Atlanta Braves will be the first opening day start for Hamels, who was beat out for the assignment for the last three seasons by teammate Roy Halladay and before that for three seasons by Brett Myers.

The move also ends a string of 10 opening day starts for Halladay, the longest among active pitchers.

Hamels, 29, would have started opening day in in 2009, but suffered a late spring training injury. The 2012 All-Star signed a six-year, $144 million extension seven months ago, bypassing free agency.
