Phil Davis Braces for “UFC on Fox 4” Showdown Against Wagner Prado: Fan Reaction

Yahoo Contributor Network

Phil Davis suffered his first professional loss in MMA against Rashad Evans at "UFC on Fox 2," getting outwrestled by the former light-heavyweight champion. He'll have the opportunity to hand UFC newcomer Wagner Prado his first professional loss when two square on Aug. 4, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

The fight between the two will be on the undercard of the "UFC on Fox 4" fight card, and Davis seems pretty confident he'll be able rise back to the top of the light-heavyweight rankings.

"I still find that fight [against Evans] to be a little bit of a milestone," Davis said during a conversation with Dave Doyle. "I haven't been in the sport for that long and I stayed with a guy who's been doing it two or three times longer than I have, so it's just, you know, it is what it is. I don't feel like it's necessary a fall off the horse type of situation. … It's not something I'd say I could forget about, but I don't dwell on it either. My motivation for winning was never beating Rashad; it's to be a champion. … I still want to be the champion, I'm still 100 percent confident I'll be there, and just approach every day as such."

Given what I've seen from Davis so far, he's certainly one of most promising fighters in the division. Things didn't go his way against Evans, but losing a five-round decision to one of the best fighters in the division isn't anything to be ashamed of.

Davis' striking seems to be his biggest weakness, so it'll be interesting to see how much his skills have evolved in the past few months. He'll also need to learn how to set up his takedowns a bit better with his strikes, if he wants to be able to outwrestle other top grapplers in the division.
