PGA Tour Goes Virtual with Gear VR App
Golf is next on the long list of sports to embrace virtual reality: Users of Samsung’s Gear VR headset can now get an immersive golf lesson from star golfers Patrick Rodgers and Peter Malnati, thanks to a collaboration between PGA Tour and virtual reality (VR) startup IM360.
PGA Tour’s new app for the Gear VR, which is now available on the Oculus Store, features one-on-one instructions from the two pro golfers filmed at the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale, as well as a closer look at the Scottsdale golf course and a behind-the-scenes look at PGA Tour’s live broadcast.
Speaking of which: There’s no live content available via the app, but PGA Tour promises to release additional VR videos throughout the year.
PGA Tour isn’t the professional sports organization to embrace VR, but up until now, most sports events have been a bit more hands-on: DirectTV released a VR app for Big Knockpout Boxing last year, and Fox Sports recently streamed a Premier Boxing Champions match live to Gear VR headset owners.
