Penguins add Downie on one-year deal

The SportsXchange

The Pittsburgh Penguins added to their roster overhaul by signing former Philadelphia Flyers forward Steve Downie to a one-year, $1 million deal Wednesday on the second day of free agency.

Downie, 27, known as a bit of a loose cannon, had his best season (22 goals, 24 assists) in 2009-10 while playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning under current Penguins assistant coach Rick Tocchet.

Downie had four goals, 20 assists and 106 penalty minutes for the Flyers and Colorado Avalanche in an injury-filled season last year.

The move comes a day after the Penguins added defenseman Christian Ehrhoff, forwards Blake Comeau and Marcel Goc and goaltender Thomas Greiss via free agency.
