SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Point guard Tyreke Evans scored a game-high 25 points and added 12 assists, including two during a late 12-2 run that helped the New Orleans Pelicans break open a tight affair and beat the Sacramento Kings 113-100 on Monday night at Sleep Train Arena.
Evans, the former Kings point guard who was making his return to the city he called home during his first four NBA seasons, set up Alexis Ajinca with a layup down low, and then set up forward Ryan Anderson for a 3-pointer during New Orleans' late run, which came after the teams were tied 92-92 with 5:35 left.
Anderson, the Pelicans' leading scorer, was held to eight points, but five of his teammates finished in double figures. Forward Anthony Davis finished with 19 points, guard Jrue Holliday had 17 and guard Eric Gordon added 17.
Gordon did not play the final 21 minutes after leaving with a right hip bruise early in the third quarter.
Center DeMarcus Cousins scored a game-high 24 points and tallied 14 rebounds for Sacramento, which lost for the sixth time in eight games. Point guard Isaiah Thomas added 18 points and five assists, and guard Marcus Thornton came off the bench to score 19 for the Kings.
Sacramento hurt its cause with 22 turnovers. Forward Rudy Gay was charged with six of them, while Cousins, Thomas and Thornton had four each. Gay, playing his seventh game with the Kings since being acquired from Toronto earlier this month, scored only 11 points and made only two of his 12 shots from the field.
NOTES: Pelicans C Jason Smith missed his second consecutive game due to a bruised bone in his right knee. Anthony Davis started in his place. ... Kings G Isaiah Thomas averaged just shy of 39 minutes per game in the first eight games he started after the trade of G Greivis Vasquez to the Toronto Raptors, and Kings coach Michael Malone said the figure needs to go down in fairness to Thomas. In the Kings' win over the Magic in Orlando on Sunday, Thomas played 42:44. ... Pelicans G Tyreke Evans played against his former team for the first time. Evans was traded by the Kings to New Orleans in a three-team trade in July after spending his first four seasons and earning Rookie of the Year with Sacramento. ...
