The New York Cosmos will take to the field for the first time as a reincarnated franchise in early August, starting a fresh chapter for the storied club, but the links to the past will be supremely prevalent. Follow GOAL.COM on Twitter
Brazilian icon and former Cosmos legend Pele is slated to attend the club's first NASL match against the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers at Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium on Aug. 3. Pele, along with Carlos Alberto and the late Giorgio Chinaglia will be honored at the match, with Alberto and Chinaglia's family accompanying Pele for the pregame ceremonies.
"We can never forget the great memories of playing for the Cosmos," Pelé, the team's honorary president, said in a club statement. "It's good to have the team back, and to involve my friend and captain Carlos Alberto along with the family of Giorgio Chinaglia."
The Cosmos shut down in 1984 before being revived a few years ago. Coached by Giovanni Savarese, the club has built its roster with some familiar names, most notably former Spain standout international Marcos Senna.
