Paxton Lynch time: Trevor Siemian carted off with injury

A lot of people figured over the offseason that Paxton Lynch might make his NFL debut sometime in October.

The Denver Broncos, however, didn’t expect it to happen like it did on Sunday.

Trevor Siemian, who has been very good as the Broncos started the season 3-0, was slammed onto his left non-throwing shoulder in the second quarter. Buccaneers defensive lineman Clinton McDonald picked Siemian up and drove him to the turf. Siemian was carted off shortly afterward, and Lynch took his first NFL snaps. Siemian was deemed questionable to return by the Broncos with a shoulder injury.

Via Troy Renck of the ABC affiliate in Denver, the Broncos’ radio broadcast said Siemian could have returned in the second half in case of emergency.

Lynch was selected in the first round of this year’s draft, and it was assumed he’d be the Broncos’ starting quarterback before too long this season. But SIemian, a 2015 seventh-round pick, won the job in the preseason and took a stranglehold of the job with a good start. Last week Siemian threw 312 yards and four touchdowns in his first road start against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Broncos probably figured, months ago, that Lynch would be playing by now. After Siemian’s fast start this season, that timetable changed … until Siemian was carted off with an injury.
