Paul out 8 weeks following thumb surgery

Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul had surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, the team announced.

The injury occurred last month while Team USA was practicing in Las Vegas.

Paul is expected to be out of action for about eight weeks. That means he's likely to miss all of training camp and all preseason games, but may be ready to play in the Clippers' regular-season opener Oct. 31 against Memphis.

Despite the injury, Paul played and started all eight games for Team USA in the Olympics, helping the team to a gold medal.
