Pats sign TE D.J. Williams

With tight end Michael Hoomanawanui nursing a knee injury, the New England Patriots shored up the position Tuesday, signing free agent tight end D.J. Williams.

Williams, 25, was released by the Green Bay Packers following the preseason, and he was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars. In seven games (one start) for Jacksonville, Williams had no receptions. He spent the previous two years with the Packers, making a combined nine catches for 70 yards in 26 games (two starts).

Green Bay selected Williams in the fifth round of the 2011 draft out of Arkansas.

The Patriots made several other moves Tuesday. They waived defensive tackle Marcus Forston, who had three tackles in three games. New England also cut defensive back Justin Green, who appeared on eight plays Sunday against the Denver Broncos in his NFL debut.

New England lost defensive lineman A.J. Francis from its practice squad when the Miami Dolphins signed him to their active roster. Francis spent the preseason with Miami, then was acquired off waivers by the Patriots in early September. He did not appear in a game with New England.
