Patriots release Fanene

The SportsXchange

Defensive lineman Jonathan Fanene was released by the New England Patriots on Tuesday, even though he received a signing bonus of $3.85 million in the offseason.

Fanene signed a three-year, $9.85 million contract with the Patriots in March after playing seven years with Cincinnati Bengals.

In a conference call Tuesday, coach Bull Belichick said it "just didn't work out."

Fanene missed the past few weeks of practice and both preseason games with a knee injury.

Fanene played in 12 games, including two starts, for the Bengals last season.
